You’ve got your paycheck. You’ve got your Money Playlist. Things are looking good.
And then… your laptop gives up. Your pet needs urgent treatment. Your company downsizes and suddenly you’re job hunting.
Not fun.
But also… not impossible. Life has a habit of throwing surprise expenses at us.
An emergency fund helps turn: “Oh no. How will I pay for this?” into “Not okay, but I’ve got this.”
That’s why we’re building one.
Your financial power bank
You know how a power bank works – you keep it charged, and most days you don’t even think about it.
But when your phone battery dies at a bad time, you reach for it and you’re so glad it’s there.
Your emergency fund works the same way.
How much should you have in it?
The general rule of thumb is to set aside at least 3 to 6 months of your essential expenses – your Essentials from your Money Playlist.
That might sound like a lot. And honestly, it is – at first.
But you don’t need to get there overnight. You just need to build the habit to charge it one payday at a time!

Want another option?
Instead of a savings account, you can also explore Singapore Savings Bonds (SSBs). They’re backed by the Singapore Government and offer flexibility while helping your money earn some returns.
Don’t worry about mastering SSBs today. For now, just know they’re one possible home for emergency-fund savings.

When to use this power bank?
If it can wait or be planned for or is a treat (like those concert tickets that are selling out fast), it’s not an emergency.
So that’s this month’s challenge! Give yourself some peace of mind by setting up an emergency fund. Ready, set, go!
