Last month you met your crew. The Ordinary Account, Special Account and MediSave Account – they’ve been quietly compounding away while you were out living your life.
But you know what? They can do a lot more if you show up too.
Let’s talk about the Special Account
Your Special Account has one job: making sure that when you’re old and done with working, money still shows up every month, for as long as you live.
Not a lump sum you have to ration, and not a “hope you budgeted right” situation – literally a monthly income in retirement, automatically, for life.
The more money you have in your SA, the bigger that monthly payout will be.
Future You – the one who wants to sleep in, say yes to last-minute trips, and never stress about financial security – is going to be glad this account exists.
Here’s how you can show up for your Special Account
On top of what’s already going in automatically every month, you can also top it up voluntarily – and when you do, you get tax relief based on how much you put in, up to $8,000 in tax relief per year.
Small, regular top-ups add up more than you’d expect over time, because compounding rewards patience.
Not convinced? Let’s look at the numbers:
We’ve given an example of $200 in top-ups per month, but the minimum top-up is just $1, so there’s really no pressure to go big here.
“But I might need that money”
Fair. Here’s the honest answer: money you put into your SA stays in your SA until you’re much older.
So only top up what you genuinely won’t miss. Even $50 a month is $600 a year quietly snowballing at up to 5% p.a.
One easy move this month
Set up a small recurring top-up to your SA. Pick an amount that won’t hurt, set it up once, then you can forget about it and return to chilling out.
- Step One: Set up a GIRO arrangement
- Step Two: Set up the recurring top-up
That’s it. Doable from your phone, and your crew will handle the rest.
If you’re feeling it, here’s one more thing you can do
Take five minutes to try the Retirement Payout Planner.
Plug in your details, and it’ll show you what your estimated monthly payout could look like in retirement. You can also play around with different top-ups amounts to see how even small changes now translate into a meaningfully bigger monthly income later.
It’s the closest thing to a crystal ball for Future You’s finances, and it’s genuinely kind of interesting to poke around in.
