YOUR MEDISAVE ACCOUNT (MA): THAT RELIABLE FRIEND THAT’S GOT YOU WHEN YOU’RE DOWN
Your healthcare safety net, ready when you need it. ⋅ 6m read
You know that friend who turns up with a hot drink and listening ear when you’re under-the-weather? That’s your MediSave Account.
Growing your savings at 4% to 5% interest per year, it handles:
- Outpatient treatments and hospital stays
- Day surgeries and rehab
- Chronic condition management
- Health Insurance premiums (101: “premiums” are what you pay to be covered by insurance) for:
- MediShield Life
- Additional Health Insurance
MediShield Life: Here for the big ones
MediShield Life is health insurance that covers large hospital bills and selected costly outpatient treatments like cancer drugs and dialysis.
And yes, you’re already covered. Singapore Citizens are covered from birth (your parents probably paid your premiums through their MediSave until you turned 21). Permanent Residents are automatically covered too – no paperwork needed.
Got a condition? No problem – you’re still in. Unlike private health insurance that might reject you for having diabetes, asthma, or any health issues you had before applying, MediShield Life covers everyone regardless.
With MediShield Life and MediSave in place, 9 out of 10 subsidise bills are fully coered without any need for out-of-pocket cash.
Additional Health Insurance: Integrated Shield Plans
If you want extra coverage beyond what MediShield Life offers, you can buy an Integrated Shield Plan (IP).
- An IP is an optional private health insurance plan that adds to MediShield Life
- It covers optional upgrades like private healthcare and A/B1 wards
- Premiums can be partly paid with your MediSave savings. The remainder must be paid in cash.
HOW IT ALL WORKS TOGETHER
- Government Subsidies slash your bill (up to 80% off)
- Insurance such as MediShield Life covers most of what’s left
- Your MediSave savings handle the remaining portion
- MediFund is the safety net if you’re still struggling
